Why links are harder for adult sites
A backlink is a vote from one site to another, and Google still counts votes. The problem for a porn site is that most of the sites that give votes will not link to adult content: mainstream blogs, news sites, universities and general directories either refuse outright or strip the link. So the generic advice (guest post on authority sites, get featured in roundups, pitch journalists) mostly does not transfer. The links that are available to adult sites are a smaller set, and getting them is a routine rather than a campaign.
Sources that actually link to porn sites
- Adult directories. The oldest link source in the industry and still one of the few that is open to a new site. Submit to the ones that are curated and have real traffic, and skip the ones that list ten thousand sites on one page. Our own adult industry directory is one example of a curated directory that links out.
- Adult industry press. The trade publications that cover the business side of adult run news on launches, deals and people. A press release about something newsworthy (a launch, a partnership, a data report) is how small operators get covered.
- Your vendors. Hosts, processors, script vendors and agencies publish customer stories and client lists. If you are a paying customer, ask. A case study on a vendor site is a relevant, permanent link.
- Affiliate program listings. If you run an affiliate program, affiliate directories and review blogs will list it, and every listing is a link.
- Performers and studios. The people in your content have their own sites and profiles. Credit them, send them the link, and most will link back to the scene.
- Tube and cam profiles. Channel and profile pages on tube sites, cam sites and clip stores allow a website link. Most are nofollow, so they carry little authority, but they send real visitors and they establish your brand name across the sites Google associates with adult.
- Adult blogs and forums. Guest posts and interviews on adult blogs, and a real presence on the industry forums where operators talk, produce links over time. The condition is that you contribute something; drive-by link drops get deleted.
- Linkable assets on your own site. Guides, data, tools and reference pages that other adult sites want to cite. This is the only source that scales, and it is why the free content on a paysite matters for search.
What gets porn sites penalized
Adult is full of link schemes because the legitimate sources are scarce, and Google has seen all of them. Avoid private blog networks, paid link packages, automated directory blasts, comment and forum spam, reciprocal link pages, and link exchanges at scale. These either do nothing or earn a manual action that costs more to clean up than the links were worth. Buying a hundred links for fifty dollars is buying a penalty.
A monthly link routine
Link building for an adult site is a small amount of work done every month, not a project. A workable routine: submit to two or three curated directories, send one story to the trade press when there is something real to say, ask one vendor or partner for a link, credit and notify the performers in that month's releases, and publish one piece of content another site would want to reference. Twelve months of that beats any one-time push.
Measuring it
Track your link profile with a backlink tool (Ahrefs and Semrush both index adult sites), watch for toxic links pointing at you and disavow them if a manual action is likely, and judge the program on the number that matters: search clicks in Search Console, read alongside your SEO work and your on-page fundamentals, and confirm in your analytics that the traffic those links bring actually converts. Links that do not move clicks within a quarter are not the links you need more of.
