Rent a GPU by the hour to start, buy one when you are running it most of the day, and treat the pay-per-image APIs as a price benchmark you mostly cannot use, because nearly all of them ban adult content. All prices below are from the vendors' own pages on September 8, 2026, and they change often.
Pay per image, if they let you
The hosted services are cheap and fast: FLUX dev at about 2.5 cents per megapixel on fal.ai and Replicate, FLUX schnell at a third of a cent per megapixel, Black Forest Labs' own FLUX pro at 4 cents an image, Google's Gemini image model at about 4 cents. Video is dearer: Wan on fal.ai at 8 cents per second at 720p, Google's Veo at 40 cents per second, Runway from 5 to 28 cents per second, Luma from 15 cents to $1.20 for a five second clip depending on resolution. The catch: fal.ai, Google, OpenAI, Runway and Luma all prohibit sexually explicit output in their terms. Replicate's terms bar nonconsensual and illegal pornography without a blanket ban, but each model's license still applies. Read the current terms of any service before you send it an explicit prompt, and assume the answer is no.
Rent a GPU by the hour
This is where adult work actually happens. Rough per-hour rates on RunPod, which lists a cheaper community tier and a pricier secure tier: an RTX 4090 at $0.34 to $0.74, an RTX 5090 at $0.69 to $0.99, an L40S at $0.79 to $1.09, an A100 80GB at $1.19 to $1.59, and an H100 at $1.99 to $3.49. Vast.ai's marketplace lists 4090s from as low as $0.14 an hour, but that is the floor of a bidding market, not the typical price. Lambda's H100s run $3.29 to $4.29. For contrast, an H100 on AWS on demand works out to about $6.88 per GPU hour. Serverless options bill per second at higher hourly rates, around $1.10 an hour for a 4090 class on RunPod, and make sense when the GPU would otherwise sit idle.
For images, a 4090 or 5090 is enough. For the bigger video models you need 80 GB cards, which is why video costs five to ten times what images do. The next sections turn these rates into a cost per finished image and per finished clip.
Buy one
A card you own costs its purchase price plus electricity, and nothing per hour after that. The section further down on electricity gives the break-even math. The short version: if the rented card would run more than a few hours a day, every day, owning wins within a year or two. If you are generating a set on the weekend, renting wins forever.
